This is the first of my family series, each one tackling a theme. I originally made Mother, Mother for a magazine cover competition, but it became much more to me in the process. She became this ever-enduring Earth to me, a Mother Earth. We've done so much to her and she has gone through more than enough, but she's still here. The piece—and eventually the whole Family series—is about survival. It's an ode to my mother too, in a way. I think I got 3rd place in the competition, which was unexpected. I never expected to get that high. I'm still quite proud of it, looking back. I wouldn't change a thing. Maybe I'd change how I cut up the pieces though.
