"To hear this story is to inhabit a world of unrelenting terror that refuses to let us pass by on the other side."
For this custom wraparound book cover I made for Phyllis Trible's "Texts of Terror", I leaned in on depicting all four of her subjects in the bookjacket, but sadly could only fit three. On the main cover is the unnamed concubine, on the back depicts a scene with the tale of Tamar, and on the bookflaps I focused on Hagar and her son, Ishmael. I went to work on the frame first, picking a rotting sort of shade for the green then painted various shapes (using reference, ofc) until I was satisfied with the sharp, thorny frames. Did some light sketching for the title before I finalized on the design since I already knew what I had in mind, then the rest is brutal, diluted collage. This book deals with uncomfortable to downright horrifying stories in the Bible text, so I wanted to give it some justice with a proper book cover (no offense to the original cover designer.)
I just want to clarify that this is *not* official, and that I made this a custom book cover for the very book I gifted to Julia and is not intended for sale. However, Phyllis Trible if you're somehow reading this, please get me to make your book cover if you ever republish.
